Deprivation
An official ranking of how deprived each small area of England is, shown in tenths: 1 is the most deprived tenth, 10 the least.
Use it
Example
An area in decile 6 is less deprived than at least half of England's small areas, and more deprived than the 40% in deciles 7 to 10.
How we calculate it
- The figure is the Index of Multiple Deprivation from the English Indices of Deprivation 2025 (MHCLG).
- It combines income, employment, education, health, crime, barriers to housing and services, and the living environment.
- Every LSOA in England is ranked on it, and the ranks are cut into ten equal deciles.
The fine print
- It is a rank, not an absolute amount: decile 1 means "more deprived than most", not that everyone there is deprived.
- On the Compared with London dots, more dots means more deprived.
- An area's ranking figure is the average decile of the neighbourhoods inside it.
LSOA
Deprivation decile
Official Index of Multiple Deprivation decile for each LSOA.
- A decile summarises an area and says nothing about an individual household.
