How the figure is made
We count gyms, fitness studios and sports centres on our places map inside the area's boundary, the shape on the map: a place just across a boundary road counts for its neighbour.
We divide the count by the area's land in square kilometres, so the figure is gyms and sports centres per km² and a large area does not come first just for being large.
Areas with fewer than 5 such places are left out: a few places in a small area would otherwise top the list.
It counts places, not people: it says nothing about who lives in an area. Our places map merges OpenStreetMap, FSA food hygiene rating data, Overture Maps places and Foursquare Open Source Places and counts a place only where the sources agree, so a new place may be missing and a closed one still listed.
